Jubilee Teamwork

2023 is a year of celebration for many reasons. Emerging from the Covid experience since March 2020, where everyone had to adapt to a global pandemic and changes with strict travel protocols, frustrations, and tensions. 2023 offers the first opportunity to release all that pent-up energy on the Carnival stage after years. Additionally, 2023 also marks the Diamond Jubilee (60th Anniversary) of the National Panorama in Trinidad and Tobago.

The song titled 'Jubilation' aims to capture the burning desire to celebrate our music and life, embracing the pure essence of pan. Collaborating for this theme Destra Garcia, Amrit Samaroo, and Mark Loquan certainly brought Jubiliation to the scene. For Destra, this collaboration holds a special significance as it coincides with her own milestone – her 20th Anniversary in the soca industry since her debut album.

Amrit Samaroo, a veteran arranger for the large band Supernovas, chose to step back from the recent trend of focusing on pure soca music. Instead, he planned to arrange original pan music, a departure from the norm. Thus, at the end of 2022, Amrit approached Mark Loquan, with whom he had previously collaborated in 2009, 2016, and 2017, to work together on an original composition once again. The theme 'Jubilation' emerged, and later, to their surprise, Pan Trinbago also announced 'Jubilation, Nothing Sweeter Than Pan' as the theme for Panorama 2023.

Destra's history of collaborations with Mark and/or Ken Philmore, including songs like 'Colours Again,' 'Hooked,' 'Surrender,' 'Calling Meh,' and 'Vibes,' led her to be invited to join this collaboration. Her unique creative and vocal talents infused the song from its early stages, adding her own distinct brand to it. While this marks her first time working with Amrit, it is her 12th collaboration with Mark.

Destra remarked, “I never thought I would create another pan tune since the passing of my dear friend Ken "Professor" Philmore. This holds special meaning for me – after two years of the pandemic and the realization of how much was taken for granted, especially on the anniversary of my 20th album. Both my first and 20th albums feature a pan song. Collaborating for genuine jubilation and freedom feels rejuvenating, almost like a cleansing.”

Mark echoed, “This collaboration feels perfectly timed. Even though I had no intentions or desire to compose for Panorama as 2022 came to an end, Amrit's call ignited a bass line I had been toying with for months, leading to a rough melody. Working with Destra once again and collaborating with Amrit (for the fourth time) in this pivotal moment for the "Mother of All Carnivals" was exhilarating. This process takes me beyond the jubilation theme and prompts reflection on the original pan compositions by Dr. Ray Holman, Ken Philmore's "Pan by Storm," Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, and others. It's a reminder to let the music flow, starting with a bass line, as was the case here.”

Amrit, who championed the idea of creating an original composition, shared, “Early on, our band felt a calling to revive music tailored to the instrument that would truly allow us to express ourselves. Collaborating with Mark and Destra resulted in a truly enchanting piece that Supernovas will bring to life on the Panorama stage. We believed that marking the 60th anniversary of Panorama should be done in song, as is customary for our culture. Thus, we are pleased with the outcome and eager to infuse the Panorama stage with vibrant vibes once again."
